Five Favorite Children’s Books

I’ve been tagged to nominate my top five children’s books. Thank you, Jennie!

Rules:
1. Thank whoever’s nominated you and share their blog link.
2. Let us know your top five children’s books.
3. Nominate 5 people to do the same.
4. Let your nominees know you nominated them.

It’s near impossible to choose only five, so I’ll purposely limit myself by skipping all the brilliant middle grade and YA books, as well as all the newest picture books. Instead I’ll choose from the same picture books I most likely have mentioned before—the first ones that made me pause and say, WOW, imagine being able to create such wonder.

Here they are, a few of my favorite children’s picture books:

Who could not love Miss Rumphius with her beautiful intentions and her cozy home by the sea?
Farmer Palmer’s Wagon Ride is tremendously funny and clever with brilliant word choices!
I haven’t read Oma and Bobo in way too long but I’ll always remember the characters and emotions of this sweet story.
Frances is such a wise little character and she’s adorable to boot.
Library Lion–a
perfect union of author and illustrator resulting in an array of emotions and rich character development.

Interesting to note, all of the above are way over the word count for today’s requirements. 🙂

My nominees to post their own list of favorite children’s books (if they choose to do so!):

Rhonda at The Thankful Heart
Barbara at Book Club Mom
Cindy at
Simply.Cindy
Lynn at Whimsical Words
Diana at Myths of the Mirror

  2. Looks like a good group of books to read. I especially like the Library Lion and the Francis books. I recently read a couple of books to my little nieces that I enjoyed so much I bought them for myself. They are Buddy and Earl and Shhh…Roger is Reading a Book. Do you know them.

    • Roger is Reading a Book is lots of fun. I’ll have to check out Buddy and Earl. Thanks for the suggestions!

  3. Wonderful books, Marcia, and thanks for the nomination. I’m honored. I just love picture books. It was one of the best parts of becoming a granny – getting to read them all again and hunt around for new ones. Happy Reading!

    • I think that’s why I resort to my early favorites, too many great ones followed. You, too, Darlene!

  5. I’m familiar with three out of your five choices. A good reason to go to the library and check out the others. Miss Rumphius would be in my top five too!

This such a nice list of books. I do like the older classics too. I worked in a preschool that had a very old library but the stories stood the test of time. And the word counts are up there but we found that children do listen to longer stories just fine. The biggest problem was the books were so well used they needed a lot of tape to hold them together. Thanks for tagging me. I hope to do a favourite picture book post if time permits. 😊

    • Well loved books do get awfully worn out over time. I think most kids like longer stories, too. It’s more the parents who can sometimes be in too much of a hurry.

  11. Thank you, Marcia! Oh, I love your choices!! I’m most excited to discover a new book, Farmer Palmer’s Wagon Ride, as I am a big fan of William Steig. Headed to the library tomorrow. Funny thing, I have a blog post tucked away about his books. I think I’ll read Library Lion at school today. Best to you, Marcia!

    • Library Lion is such a sweet story. Interesting to note, like Miss Rumphius, the main characters are adults (along with a real ‘non-anthropomorphic’ lion). 🙂
