Art Around Town

As you may have noticed from earlier posts, art has always been a big part of my life, so it’s no surprise that a painter plays an important role in Amy’s Choice (sequel to Call Me Amy is now available!). Haverhill shoe - small

Art is everywhere and sometimes where you least expect it. Over the last few years, amazing shoes have popped up all over my city to celebrate its shoe industry history. Some of the newer shoes also serve as benches, like this one which stands in front of the elementary school my children attended.???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????I love this scholarly lion!

???????????????????????????????Downtown there are gorgeous murals and twice I’ve run into displays of giant dog sculptures on the common.

I love the pictures of shoes! And I love to see art out in communities. Lenox, MA has some lovely pieces in the parks. Have you ever seen the cow project that various cities have done as a fundraiser for local charities? Lots of “blank” cow sculptures are donated, various businesses/individuals paint them, they are displayed around the city, then the cows are auctioned off to raise money for the charities. It’s neat to see them all around the city.

    • I’ll have to revisit Lenox, it’s been many years. I have run into painted cows here and there, same idea as the shoes and so fun to see. I think there was a Picasso-style cow in Boston. Thanks for adding to the conversation, Hayetna!

These are great! I like how the shoes are also benches. I saw knitted trees once in a park.

Wow, I love these! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shoe bench before. 🙂

    • Yes, I think someone was clever to turn these beautiful sculptures into something more practical.

NYC had an amazing display of giant Easter eggs all over midtown last year, but they went away after the holiday.
Those shoes look good enough to live in, together with the old woman who had so many children…

Oh, how fun! When I lived in Redmond, we had a lot of outdoor art in public spaces. We loved rambling in all the parks.

I love these shoe sculptures! That they are benches makes them even more amazing! I have always loved street art and my little town has metal containers over the utility boxes with painted scenes from the town. I think we have at least twelve of them!
Thank you for sharing this very fun post! 🙂

  8. A few months back we visited Bristol to see the Gromit unleashed charity arts trail. It was a lot of fun. They held something similar recently, but we missed that one. There isn’t much artwork in our little village unless you count the graffiti!
I love the ‘bench shoes’ and would enjoy sitting on a few of them.
    Have a super weekend.
