Porch Musings
My porch looked particularly inviting yesterday. Only trouble was it was time for me to leave for my library job. So…I snapped a picture instead. Do you have a favorite place to write, or read, or sit, or dream? My question makes me think of this poem, sung by Bilbo in The Fellowship of the Ring. What a perfect response–anyone else?
I Sit And Think
I sit beside the fire and think of all that I have seen,
of meadow-flowers and butterflies in summers that have been;
Of yellow leaves and gossamer in autumns that there were,
with morning mist and silver sun and wind upon my hair.
I sit beside the fire and think of how the world will be
when winter comes without a spring that I shall ever see.
For still there are so many things that I have never seen:
in every wood in every spring there is a different green.
I sit beside the fire and think of people long ago,
and people who will see a world that I shall never know.
But all the while I sit and think of times there were before,
I listen for returning feet and voices at the door.

That is an amazing porch, and since I love my library, I’d say you’re surrounded by Beauty all day long. (The library cafe is where I love to sit and write.) Thanks for sharing that Bilbo poem, too. I haven’t read it before and it’s brought some calmness to my hectic day.

Ah, that porch is inviting.
A favorite place to write is not so much a favorite for me as it is the routine- a sort of ritual that says, if you’re here- then it’s writing time. I’m not very good at writing anywhere anytime.

Good point, although unfortunately, my usual writing place is also my ‘go online’ place, so I sometimes have to find a nook in a public library, just to get away from distractions.

Lovely post!! I love my porch too and life seems to get in the way of spending my time in it!!!!
One of my favorite quotes from Walt Whitman is: “I loaf and invite my soul.”
It is during the quiet times, that you feel the universe is moving with you not around you..
A wonderful reminder for all of us to slow down and to make the time for quiet and reflection.

When I was younger, my favorite place to read or write was my hammock. I was out there in the rain (unless there was thunder or lightning), the cold (unless it was under 39 degrees), or the heat (if it was over 105 degrees). Now, as far as writing (or at least mentally composing, talking through my writing) goes, I tend to “write” while driving in the car on long stretches. It helps me work through plot snarls. I can literally read anywhere, though (although I get a bit in trouble if I try to walk and read at the same time).

What a lovely looking porch with a view. My writing office doesn’t have a nice view like that, but it’s comfortable.
